Terence Crawford looks to have entered the final chapter of what has been a remarkable career.

Since making his professional debut 17-years-ago, the 37-year-old switch-hitter from Omaha, Nebraska has made his way through the ranks to capture world titles in four weight divisions, as well as becoming the undisputed champion at super lightweight and welterweight respectively.

His latest ring appearance came last August when he defeated Israil Madrimov to claim the WBA light middleweight title in his debut at 154lbs. Since claiming victory over Madrimov, ‘Bud’ has turned his attention to Mexican superstar and unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, with a mega-fight between the pair set to take place in Las Vegas this September.

Speaking on the Earn Your Leisure Podcast, the 37-year-old revealed he has the utmost confidence in his own boxing ability, claiming the only way he can lose is if he beats himself.

“My mindset is always, win at all costs. Make sure I’m coming in at 110% shape and prepared for whatever the opponent brings to the table. Make sure that I’m at the best of my abilities going into a fight so I don’t have to worry about anybody else.

A lot of people ask me ‘what have you got to do to win a fight’, and I always say, ‘just be myself’. I always say that because I obviously feel that I’m Terence Crawford and can’t nobody beat me unless I beat myself.”

Crawford will be looking to achieve what many people believe is the unthinkable when he steps up to 168lbs to challenge Canelo, who holds the WBC, WBA and WBO titles at 168lbs. It’s an opportunity for ‘Bud’ to become a five-weight world champion, which would be a defining moment in what’s been a sensational professional career.

Terence Crawford believes he ranks as an all-time great if he can jump up in weight and dethrone Canelo Alvarez.

Crawford has already achieved it all in the boxing ring, winning world titles in four weight classes by the age of 37, including the undisputed crown at super-lightweight and welterweight.

He has faced a resume of tough opponents including Kell Brook, Amir Khan, Shawn Porter and Errol Spence Jr.

But the biggest examination of his ring credentials is set to come this year as he is set to touch gloves with fellow pound-for-pound great Alvarez.

The pair will meet in a blockbuster clash in front of over 60,000 fans in Las Vegas in September, with the fight to take place for Alvarez’s 168lbs belts if he beats William Scull in May.

Crawford is set to put on 14lbs from his previous fighting weight where he took on and beat Israil Madrimov at 154lbs in September.

It will be a seismic task to dethrone the naturally bigger Mexican, but if he successfully does so, he can become a five-weight world champion.

It would see him match boxing legend Floyd Mayweather’s total record of becoming a five-weight world champion in his stellar fifty-fight undefeated career.

And Crawford believes reaching that feat and winning the bout, will see him ranked as a one of the best fighters of all-time.

He said on The Cigar Talk podcast: “Yeah I think I would definitely rank my resume in the top five.

“I’m really moving up three weight classes in all reality, and fighting arguably one of the best Mexicans to ever fight.

“It’s at his weight, no rehydration clause, I am just fighting the guy at his best.

“My body of work that I have put together, I feel like I can compete with anybody at any era.

“If I win this fight, it will solidify myself as an all-time great because there isn’t many fighters who have done what I did.

“Coming from 135lbs to 168lbs it is crazy.”

Crawford will have put on a total of 33lbs of fighting weight during his stellar career.

Mayweather fought from 130lbs to 154lbs, a total pile on of 24lbs, which could see the new American on the block make a frightening leap.

Of course it could dramatically backfire given Crawford could feasibly lose, given it will be his debut at the higher weight.

It is still a difficult fight to pick the winner, imposing an intriguing clash of styles on fight night.

But ex-world champion Johnny Nelson doesn’t expect Crawford to be able to bridge the gap.

He told talkSPORT.com: “Yeah I think the weight and size will play a big impact in the fight.

“I think Canelo will simply be too big and too strong for him if Crawford puts on the weight.

“I think Canelo is a really clever fighter, but I’m not sure he was the fighter he once was five or six years ago.

“I think that Canelo beats Crawford to be honest, if not stops him because of that gulf in size.

“But whatever happens it is going to be a great fight, we are getting the fights between big name A and big name B.

“It is giving fight fans the opportunity for fight fans to think of dream fights and then see them become reality.”

After many months of talk, Terence Crawford‘s fight with Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez has now been locked in.

This fight sees two pound-for-pound greats face off despite being in very different weight classes.

American switch-hitter ‘Bud’ is a former undisputed super-lightweight champion who also won all four belts at welterweight. All in all, he is, like Canelo, a four-division champion.

In 2024 he made his debut at 154 pounds, still 14 pounds off Canelo’s fighting weight. The Mexican legend has won belts as high as light-heavyweight and is currently the unified super middleweight champion with a chance to become undisputed again when he faces William Scull in May.

Their fight has been made at 168lbs which gives ‘Canelo’ the natural advantage, not only as the bigger man but as he has been campaigning at the higher weights for several years and is long bedded into the division.

Speaking to Cigar Talk, Crawford has revealed that there are zero stipulations on the weight, including no rehydration clause on the day of the fight – something Canelo has used in the past.

“I’m really coming up three weight classes, in all reality. But we can say I’m moving up two weight classes, fighting arguably one of the best Mexicans ever.

“You know, and his weight, there are no rehydration clauses, no nothing, you’re just fighting him at his best. There are no stipulations in it, it’s mano-a-mano, I make weight on Friday we fight on Saturday. It’s simple.”

Manny Pacquaio is one man who has moved freely through the weights and won belts in multiple divisions and he recently warned the American ‘it’s not easy.’

Terence Crawford has landed the fight that means the most to his legacy, but he almost lost out on it to Jake Paul.

Crawford has been calling out Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez since his undisputed welterweight win against Errol Spence Jr in mid-2023, even despite the Mexican being three divisions higher at super-middleweight.

‘Bud’s pursuit ramped up after he closed the gap slightly by moving up to the 154 ranks to beat Israil Madrimov and become WBA Champion. Though Canelo had been dismissive of the match-up previously, he thawed and at the beginning of 2025 it was reported the two were negotiating through Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh.

Everything was looking positive until it was reported that Canelo, currently unified champion at 168, was deep in negotiations for a sideshow fight against controversial superstar Jake Paul. It was announced that the Crawford fight was off, with the assumption being Alalshikh was not a fan of the Paul bout taking any attention away from it.

Ultimately though, Canelo signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, commencing with a fight against IBF Champion William Scull for a chance to become undisputed at super-middleweight again. All going well for the elite Mexican, the Crawford fight will follow in September.

Paul has since branded Alvarez a ‘duck,’ claiming he had already signed a contract. Though it was a busy time for boxing news, one man who wasn’t involved was Crawford, who told Cigar Talk he had been offline and didn’t believe the reports when he was informed.

“To be 100% honest, I didn’t know nothing about none of that stuff.

I didn’t see nothing until people started calling me. I was like, ‘huh? What’s going on?’ They was like, ‘man, they cancelled your fight.’ Ain’t nobody told me, ain’t nobody called me, ain’t nobody said nothing to me, so I can’t really say what they were talking about is true. I didn’t really feed into it.

I reached out to Turki and he said everything was Gucci, so I didn’t know what everybody else was talking about.”

Crawford will sit out until September, when he will likely get the chance to become a five-weight, three-time undisputed champion.

Terence Crawford is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to secure a win against Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez at his own weight class.

The matchup that fans have been clamoring for since last year is finally on the horizon. It is set to take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas this September. Crawford is giving it his all to prepare for the showdown. But there’s a major hurdle.

While Crawford has been a dominant force in the welterweight division, Canelo reigns supreme in the super middleweight division. Even though he has made it into the light middleweight division, Canelo is still two weight classes away. To stand a chance against the Mexican icon, Crawford knows he’ll need to bulk up close to 13 lbs for the challenge.

And that’s exactly what Crawford has been doing. Based on his latest Instagram story, the Omaha native has already begun adjusting to the higher weight class, showing off a career-heaviest 186 lbs—hinting that he’s not just talking the talk, but walking the walk. His weight gain has reignited the hopes of many fans who believe Terence Crawford might just pull off the impossible. But not everyone’s buying into the hype just yet. So to silence the doubters, Crawford recently spoke up, clearing the air once and for all.

Crawford’s commitment to the challenge became clear when he recently attended Keyshawn Davis’ impressive victory over Denys Brinchyk at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York. While there, he was approached by Fight Hype for a brief conversation.

The reporter asked Crawford about his decision to move up to 168 lbs to face Canelo Alvarez. He was curious about what motivated Crawford to take on this major challenge. Crawford responded by emphasizing his desire to challenge himself. “I want to challenge myself,” the 41-0 stated confidently.

Terence Crawford acknowledged Canelo as an “all-time great.” Not just that. The 37-year-old also considers him “one of the best that came out of Mexico”. However, Crawford also sees himself as one of the “all-time greats.” He felt this was the perfect time to put his skills to the test against a fighter of Canelo Alvarez’s caliber.

Crawford’s use of the phrase “Big chances, big rewards” highlighted that he is fully aware of the high risk involved in facing a much bigger opponent. He’s not shying away from the challenge but rather embracing it with the belief that the potential reward—cementing his legacy as one of the best in the sport—makes it all worth it.

Despite his confidence, Terence Crawford’s weight increase to 186 lbs raised some eyebrows. Some wondered if this move was just a publicity stunt or a miscalculation.

Mikey Garcia, a four-division world champion, recently shared his thoughts on the situation, expressing concerns about Crawford’s weight gain. While talking to ES News, he even gave his own example and revealed, “When I was fighting, my last few fights at the welterweight division, I was weighing around 120, but I was walking around like 56-58, during training. So you still have to cut weight.”

The former four-division champion pointed out that fighters typically need to cut weight even when moving up a division, albeit less drastically. “Look everybody, even when you are “Moving up the weight,” you are still cutting weight,” stated the veteran boxer. He speculated that Terence Crawford might be exaggerating his current weight. But also noted that if Crawford could manage his new weight without affecting his performance, it could work in his favor. However, the possibility of him losing speed and agility due to the extra bulk remains a concern, especially against someone as quick as Canelo.

While the weight increase is notable, Crawford’s reputation as a top-level fighter means that any changes to his body or strategy will be closely scrutinized. It remains to be seen if the extra weight will affect his speed or if he can adapt his footwork to stay at the top of his game. The questions around his weight, performance, and whether the added bulk will hurt his speed are all part of what makes this fight so compelling.

Eddie Hearn was furious with the judging on the Terence Crawford vs Israil Madrimov fight.

Crawford became a four-weight world champion on Saturday night when he snatched the WBA super welterweight title away from Madrimov at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

All three judges scored the fight in Crawford’s favour with scorecards of 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113 to declare ‘Bud’ the winner via unanimous decision.

The fight was extremely close with members of the boxing fraternity split on who they felt won the contest.

Madrimov’s promoter, Hearn, felt Crawford needed to do more than he did to take the title for the champion and was gobsmacked by judge Jack Reiss’ 116-112 scorecard.

“It’s a waste of time,” said Hearn in his post-fight interview with DAZN.

“It’s not a 116-112 fight. He’s coming into the fight as a champion but because he’s fighting Terence Crawford he doesn’t get a shake.

“All of the effective punches were coming from Israil Madrimov. Crawford had a good flurry in the last round.

“It was a super close fight I believe you have to come in and take that belt of the champion, Terence Crawford didn’t do that and I love him he is brilliant.

Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov

“But for me, he [Madrimov] deserves to be champion tonight. It was a fight that could have gone either way and then you hear the scorecards and it’s why do you bother kind of thing.

“You lose by four rounds on two of the scorecards, it wasn’t that kind of fight.

“I was sitting in the corner, they were so quiet all fight. They knew: ‘The twelfth round, we need this’.

If anyone expected Israil Madrimov to be a soft touch to get Terence Crawford acclimated to the junior middleweight division, they walked away from Saturday’s fight with their eyes opened to Madrimov’s skills. ‘Bud’ claimed the WBA junior middleweight title inside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles with a close, but unanimous decision over his opponent from Uzbekistan.

It was clear from the early rounds that Madrimov was going to present an intriguing challenge to Crawford, arguably the sport’s best pound-for-pound fighter. Madrimov showcased fast hands and good footwork, feinting and moving to keep Crawford from getting comfortable and letting his hands go in the way he has against so many other great fighters.

Terence Crawford

Crawford worked a hard jab, maintaining a southpaw stance throughout the fight and not doing his usual stance switching, and used that jab to open up straight lefts and hard uppercuts. But Madrimov continued to make things tough, especially when he realized that Crawford was open to straight right hands.

The momentum shifted back and forth several times, with one fighter seeming to establish a flow for a few rounds before the other man would suddenly impose his own gameplan.

Ultimately, Crawford was just a little bit better than his younger opponent and took the fight on scorecards of 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113, meaning if Crawford hadn’t taken the 12th round, the fight would have ended as a majority draw.

Crawford landed 95 of 433 punches to 84 of 273 for Madrimov, according to CompuBox, showcasing how close the bout was overall. Madrimov was also able to snap an 11-fight knockout streak for Crawford.

“Israil was a tough competitor,” Crawford said after the fight. “I knew he was going to be tough like I said. He’s real strong, he’s durable, he took a lot of good shots. Like everybody knew coming into the fight, he had fast feet and good rhythm upstairs and was strong. He was waiting to counter me just like I was waiting to counter him. He fought a good fight.”

Terence Crawford vs Israil Madrimov

Madrimov said he felt he had done enough to win and asked for a rematch. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, was more upset than Madrimov after the fight, claiming the scoring felt like the scorecards were “filled out in advance.”

Crawford had been angling to continue moving up in weight, claiming he wanted a shot at Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the superstar who is unified super middleweight champion.

After the fight, Crawford slowed down on the talk, suggesting he was still interested but not pushing hard for the bout, which Turki Alalshikh said he’d already sent an offer to Alvarez for.

“You know what I say, if the money’s right, we’ve got to fight,” Crawford said. “At the same time, he has a fight he’s focused on. … [Getting the fight is] not so important to me. It’s just another milestone to greatness, I suppose. And financially-wise.”

CBS Sports was with you throughout the entire way on Saturday with live results and highlights below.

Terence Crawford is back in the ring tonight, looking to take over a new weight class.

Arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Crawford is a three-division world champion and has twice been undisputed. In his most recent fight, Crawford dominated former unified world champion Errol Spence to become undisputed at welterweight.

Terence Crawford vs Israil Madrimov

After a rematch failed to materialize, Crawford turned to the 154-pound division and its WBA champion, Israil Madrimov. Madrimov is undefeated and will be defending the title for the first time, after winning it in March with a fifth round TKO of undefeated contender Magomed Kurbanov.

“The challenge of moving to 154 and fighting Madrimov is a hill that you have to climb,” Brian McIntyre, Crawford’s trainer, said. “I know that the team and everybody around the team want(s) challenges like that so you can say we are the best out there. We have solidified that over the years.”
