Oscar De La Hoya has shared the ring with elite technical fighters, but there was one that stood out from the crowd.

‘Golden Boy’ was a truly world class operator, who incredibly won 11 world title belts in six weight classes during his stellar time perfecting the sweet science.

On his resume, De La Hoya has the likes of boxing legends Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao whom he was beaten by at the back end of his time as a professional.

He first fought Mayweather in his third to last career battle in 2007, and was unfortunate to have lost by split decision on the judges scorecards.

In the final bow of his career the following year, he fared much differently in his clash with Pacquiao, succumbing to a defeat after retiring in the eighth round.

But De La Hoya has incredibly claimed that it was Pernell Whitaker, who he fought and beat in 1997, was the highest skilled of his 45 professional opponents.

De La Hoya said: “Whitaker had to be one of the most skilful fighters in any generation – the fact he could stay right in front of you and could still slip the punches.Floyd Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao shatters boxing PPV records | Boxing News | Sky Sports

“Whitaker wasn’t a runner; he was just someone who stood right in front of you and knew how to slip.

“Whitaker knew how to knock you out, too. Punching power, skill, I.Q, Whitaker had it all. He’s probably one of the all-around best boxers I faced.”

Whitaker showed a raft of incredible defensive skills that night, frustrating De La Hoya offensively despite succumbing to a unanimous decision defeat.

The American had fantastic boxing intelligence and lightning reflexes, which helped guide him to a record of 40 wins and four defeats.

Whitaker sadly passed away in 2019, but left a huge legacy for himself in the boxing world.

De La Hoya too has a legendary legacy and headlined some iconic nights in the US.

He has continued to be an influential figure in the world of boxing since his retirement.Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather: It's Actually On - WSJ

De La Hoya formed Golden Boy Promotions, which has seen him nurture some of the sport’s biggest current stars including Canelo Alvarez and Ryan Garcia.

Mayweather and Pacquiao too went on to become two of the greatest to have ever laced up the gloves.

They finally met themselves in a long-awaited clash in 2015, which became the highest-selling pay-per-view event in boxing history.

Mayweather won and he has forever been linked with rematches against both fighters, even after retiring himself in 2017.

A legendary coach has named a boxer who was better than Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquaio.

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are widely regarded as two of the greatest boxers of all time. However, legendary trainer Miguel Diaz has named a fighter he believes was better than both.

Diaz, during his career, has trained many notable names in the sport of boxing, including Mayweather and Pacquiao. However, he reckons that James Toney was a better fighter than both of them.

During his legendary career, ‘Lights Out’ gathered a record of 77-10-3 with 47 knockout wins to his name. He even holds a win against the iconic Evander Holyfield.Floyd Mayweather

Speaking to Ring Magazine, Diaz pointed out many characteristics of fighters like Mayweather and Toney. Speaking of the fighter who had the best defense, Diaz said:

He had a tremendous defense. He used his defense to hit you. It was not a defense and no punching. He used his defense and beat you. Very good fighter, very smart, fast and very good position in the ring. His defense was untouchable. He was a natural.

He picked Toney as the smartest and strongest fighter that he has ever trained, saying:

Steve Johnston was very clever in the ring. Floyd was clever. James Toney was a very smart fighter. Everything in boxing was easy for him, he was natural. You’ve got to consider James Toney that kind of fighter, you could not push him back. Also, Mike McCallum a very strong fighter.

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will go down as two of the greatest fighters to have ever laced up the gloves.

Mayweather last fought professionally in 2015 when he defeated UFC star but boxing novice Conor McGregor. Over his 21 years as a professional ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd won 15 world titles over four different weight classes and retired with a perfect record of 50 fights with 50 wins.

Pacquiao is the only man to ever become an eight division world champion and captured 12 major world titles during his 72 fight career. Although not officially retired he was last in the ring against Yordenis Ugás in 2021 when he suffered a unanimous points defeat.

Asked what is the harder feat to achieve in boxing, retire at 50 and 0 or becoming an eight weight world champion, top trainer Robert Garcia, who coaches the likes of Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez and Jose Valenzuela, had no doubt that Pacquiao’s achievement will never be repeated again.

What’s harder, to be 50 an 0 or to be eight division champion. Eight division champion. You can be 50 and 0 if you have the right promoter and pick the right opponents. It’s almost impossible to be an eight division champion, honestly I think it’s impossible now. Pacquiao did it but it’s impossible to be an eight division world champion.”

Of course people on Mayweather’s side will point to the 8 losses suffered by PacMan including the one where the two finally met in a clash billed as ‘The Fight of the Century’. Many fans feel the fight came too late in the career of both men with the action failing to live up to the hype before Mayweather cruised to a unanimous points victory.
