Ricky Hatton has been speaking about how a mega fight with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua might go.
This contest seemed closer than ever at the very start of 2025. Both former two-time world champions Fury and Joshua had lost two back-to-back fights each with Oleksandr Usyk, who proved himself to be the greatest heavyweight on the planet with those wins.
With Fury coming off the second defeat to the Ukrainian in December and ‘AJ’ failing in his bid to become champion again against Daniel Dubois just months before, it seemed the best place for both was their long-awaited clash.
However, Fury put an end to that possibility when he announced his retirement during the first weeks of the year. Many have suggested it could well be a negotiating tactic, although as of now ‘The Gypsy King’ remains firmly retired.
Speaking to Vegas Insider, Hatton said it will be a hard one to call if it ever happens.
“We’ve been waiting to see Tyson Fury fight Anthony Joshua for 10 years now which is incredible. Tyson has had a great career; AJ has had a fantastic career, but both are showing signs of miles on the clock but it’s a fight we have always wanted to see.
“You would still pay all day long to watch the fight, let them fight each other and then I would like to see them both retire then as they have nothing more to prove. If they have that last send-off fight as we’ve all been waiting to see, they can then hang the gloves up and have made us proud.”
Hatton said Fury would be ‘disappointed’ by losing his unbeaten record to Usyk, but believes he will regret not taking the Joshua fight in years to come.
As for a prediction, he called it a pick ’em before assessing Joshua’s knockout loss to Dubois.
“It’s a tough one, I think it’s 50/50, I wouldn’t say either would be the favourite. AJ, the way he was in the corner even before he was knocked out, was a little bit casual, and I think he took Daniel Dubois lightly. He was that convinced before the fight, going into the fight, and even during the fight.
“He’s very laid back so maybe I am giving him a bit of a disservice, but he did look like he thought he was the better man and just needed to turn up to beat Daniel … I know he is a laid-back type but I think he took his eye off the ball with Daniel and you can’t do something like that with Daniel.”
